The result of a long collaboration between Spanish theorbist Daniel Zapico and multi-faceted French artist Nino Laisné, Arca Ostinata takes the shape of a dreamlike opera for a single musician or an exploratory journey around the theorbo in the meanders of time. More than the musician, it’s the instrument that’s the focus here. Arca Ostinata’s repertoire gradually takes us towards rare music from Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican or Argentinean traditions, before evoking the psychedelic guitars of the ‘70s. Thanks to electro-acoustic devices, the timbre of the instrument is altered and multiplied until it leaves its own bark to resonate in the scenography and envelop the audience in an immersive experience. By using this technology, the artists move away from the codes of the representation of baroque music to offer a renewed vision. This modern approach to baroque is further contrasted by scenography that revives the eternal fantasy of infernal machinery and lighting that relies on old techniques evoking the golden age of illusionism as much as the cinema of Méliès. With Arca Ostinata, geographical spaces merge into the confluence of multiple temporalities to offer a multi-disciplinary and intimate vision of the history of music.
