In the 1990s Carte Noire nommée Désir was known as a coffee brand. Since 2021 it has become an Afro-feminist manifesto in black and white. Director and author Rebecca Chaillon defines its outline: it’s ‘Us’ and the ‘Rest of the World’. ‘Us’ are the seven performers who accompany her on stage. The ‘Rest of the World’ is those who are watching them clean, care, braid, serve, and do those things that form the basis of a collective memory marked by colonisation – these things that assign them and that make them angry. On stage, acrobats, harpists, singers and actors – eight sisters altogether – question gender, exoticisation, hyper-sexualisation, patriarchy and this famous ‘coffee you desire’. Beyond the skin, it’s from the belly that Chaillon spouts the punk ink of this Carte Noire nommée Désir, because revolution on stage is evolution in society.
