In this part of L’Âge d’or (The Golden Age), a trilogy on architecture, power and capitalism, artists Igor Cardellini and Tomas Gonzalez explore the simulacrum of the globalised city that is the American-style mall. This theatrical form borrows its concept from tourist visits to archaeological or museum sites. Headphones on, accompanied by a guide, the audience discovers the architecture, scenography, history and some of the issues of the shopping centre – a home to mass consumption and a promise of happiness.
In the heart of MeyrinCentre, the public is invited to question the impact of these places on us. Both a sensitive experience and a way of decentring our gaze, the visit invites us to participate in an observation that puts us back in the centre: a documented, erudite, playful and sometimes disturbing project. The triptych is completed by a visit to an office building and another to a bank.
