Danse macabre

Circus / dance / theater

Martin Zimmermann’s Danse macabre features three tragicomic characters confined to a rubbish dump and facing a struggle for survival. The outcasts form a family in the face of adversity, undertake to survive, and show themselves to be mobile, inventive and light against gravity. Sometimes they fail and sink in the magma of detritus that swallows them up and engulfs them in a flowing movement, leading to a mixture of scenes of bodies and materials in a fade of reality, fiction and illusion, like a burlesque, crazy and mesmerising procession governed by an unusual force that is invisible to their eyes. A puppeteer pulls the strings and reminds them of the order of the world. Played by Zimmermann, the mischievous clown chips away at the rules, sowing the seeds of incongruity and absurdity in this wordless “freak show”, bringing out humour and humanity to oil the wheels of this great wheel of life where his Danse macabre leads us.

This show is performed after the festival until 02 October, info and ticketing from 23 September and onwards: theatredecarouge.ch
