La Bâtie introduced us to Cherish Menzo last year in Jezebel, a first opus danced like a manifesto for the liberation of the black body. Today, the Dutch dancer suspends us above the unknown, the unthought and the unthinkable. What if the black body was seen by itself? Without past, in dreams, and in the future? Inspired by post-humanism and Afrofuturism, DARKMATTER stages a new economic, social and political balance in the bodies of Cherish Menzo and Camilo Mejía Cortés, who erase the dark to reinvent it. Explore the universe, dive into astronomy… In the beginning was blackness. From this indefinite magma, the alienating rap anthems performed alongside with the Distorted Rap Choir, slowed down, over-articulated and stretched sounds slowly disintegrate and leave the duo with their autonomy, time and space. Body, can you become hypothetical, a galaxy, in full acceleration, a stellar liquid monster, if not dead? In this infinite blackness, celestial bodies and black matter collide to generate enigmatic futures. A series of terribly welcome eclipses.

NB: In the context of her show DARKMATTER, the artist Cherish Menzo launched a call for participation that brought together thirteen people for a two-day workshop on 26 and 27 August. The Association of Intercultural Mediators (AMIC), which aims to create bridges between refugees and Geneva society, proposed four motivated young people to take part in this project, with a mediator, in line with its mission to develop meeting places and allow intercultural exchanges. La Bâtie is delighted with this enriching collaboration for the cultural fabric of Geneva and for the participants.
