Hailing from Yerevan in Armenia, the Naghash Ensemble eludes any attempt at categorisation, as their music blends styles, geographies and eras. Three classical lyric singers accompanied on the duduk, oud, dhol and piano by exceptional Armenian musicians bring to life the poems of the medieval writer and priest Mkrtich Naghash in a resolutely modern musical style. At the heart of the group, composer and pianist John Hodian revisits traditional Armenian folk music, giving it a jazzy feel and scattering here and there harmonies from Western pop culture. The Naghash Ensemble’s tracks exude moving spiritual power, both in moments of penetrating serenity and in spectacular soaring melodies in which the musicians give themselves over completely in a shared trance.
