Death may worry as much as it fascinates but Davide and Giuseppe Di Liberto’s stage project, Sparge la Morte, promises to bring together these two contradictory and complementary feelings. This mystical and sensory adventure began with the madrigals of Baroque composer Carlo Gesualdo and a walk by the two brothers through the Fontanelle cemetery in Naples, where many of the tombs are covered in plastic sheeting. These simple sheets of cellophane have become the central element of the stage behind which the singers move, aided by light and shadow effects. Using wooden cemetery stairs as lecterns or podiums, the silhouettes move in a world outside of time and space, elusive even to the beams of light created by mobile structures on which UV neon lights are mounted. In this diaphanous staging where one guesses rather than sees what is unfolding, the polyphonic songs take on an esoteric dimension, creating an atmosphere conducive to questioning our own relationship with death.
